About BATON OF HOPE
The Baton of Hope: Together, We Stand Up to Suicide
The Baton of Hope is the UK’s largest-ever suicide prevention initiative — born from tragedy, driven by courage, and fuelled by hope.
In 2023, the Baton of Hope embarked on its first nationwide tour, visiting cities across the UK. Now, in 2025, the Baton of Hope tour is coming to Norwich and we are honoured to host this powerful event on 17th September.
Our local team, proudly led by Norwich Samaritans and supported by those who are bereaved, affected, or passionately committed to suicide prevention, is making this possible. The tour here in Norwich is locally funded through our generous partners and sponsors, and community fundraising.
To find out more visit our about page, view our support available to you, or contact us.
Together, we can bring hope to every corner of our city — and beyond.
TOWARDS
ZERO SUICIDE
TOWARDS
Hope
SUICIDE IS THE BIGGEST KILLER OF MEN AND WOMEN UNDER 35 IN THE UK.
More than in traffic accidents. More than from cancer. And every single one is potentially preventable.
SEVENTEEN PEOPLE WILL DIE BY SUICIDE TODAY… TOMORROW… AND THE DAY AFTER THAT.
Every one of us has a role to play in reducing the number of suicides in the UK.
Need Help ?
Baton of Hope Norwich is here to help connect you to further assistance and guidance on your journey as a survivor or bereaved of suicide.
If you are struggling, or know someone who is, please view our Need Help? page for a selection of helpline numbers and information from our partner charities and organisations, ready to help you.
MOST SUICIDES ARE PREVENTABLE, IF ONLY THE PEOPLE AROUND THE INDIVIDUAL COULD RECOGNISE AND ACT ON THE SIGNS
Two thirds of people who die by suicide are not in touch with mental health services in the year before their death — so it is Mums, Dads, Brothers, Sisters, Friends, Colleagues, (and even Strangers) who are at the forefront of the fight against suicide.
A ZERO-SUICIDE SOCIETY IS THE BATON OF HOPE’S DESTINATION.
We aim is to smash the stigma around suicide, open up the conversation, and save lives.

OPENING CEREMONY – Invite only
The RNAA in collaboration with YANA and South Norfolk FCN will be inviting the farming and rural community to join us for the start of the Baton of Hope’s Norwich journey with an opening ceremony at the Norfolk Showground.
Lady Dannatt (Norfolk’s first female Lord Lieutenant) will accept the baton from Mike McCarthy (Baton of Hope founder or whom ever is bring the baton to Norwich) with a short speech, then pass it onto the first Baton Barer who will transport the baton via tractor and trailer to the Sainsbury Centre via a parade of tractors lining the route out of Norfolk Showground. YANA and FCN will also invite families affected by suicide to ride on the trailer with the Baton Bearer.
While this is a ‘public’ event, we intend to invite members of the farming community from RNAA, YANA, & FCN's networks and contacts to promote conversations within the industry about suicide prevention and raise awareness of the support available.
The RNAA Norfolk Food Hall will be sponsoring the event and providing complimentary Bacon Rolls and hot drinks, with background music from a string quartet. There will also be several local organisations with information stalls in attendance - Mind, Norwich Samaritans, Papyrus, YANA. Local media will also be invited to attend the event. -
Open to the general public
The Sainsbury Centre, an art museum on the UEA campus, will host an arts-based well-being event which will focus on their sculpture park walking tour (with backup for bad weather).

They will provide refreshments volunteer guides to provide information about the artworks/sculptures on the day. -
